Is There Any Way to Soften That Deep Furrow Between Eyebrows?

May 11th, 2009

This 40 year young woman has a deepening cleft between her eyebrows which catches shadow and suggests a frown. Is there a simple answer? Botox is the first answer, possibly followed by a gel filler after two weeks for the ultimate smoothing. The bottom photo was taken 2 weeks after her 30 units of Botox, showing smoothing of the midline frown crease (and some brow elevation, too.)

Why is this even happening? The muscles primarily responsible for the frown lines are the forehead muscles called the corrugators (yes, like the corrugating in cardboard). They sit on either side of the eyebrows, and have a muscle shape similar to your biceps muscle in the upper arm. The corrugator muscles engage with everyday actions like looking at a screen or monitor, or showing concern or intent, or even with the bright light of the sun. In many people, the corrugator muscles have a resting tone which causes the frown lines to bec ome fairly constant.

Botox works to relax the corrugator (frown) muscles and allows the forehead to smooth. This effect takes 5-7 days and lasts 3-4 months. If the furrow between the eyebrows persists even after Botox, we add a gel filler under the skin to plump up the depression. The good news is that when Botox is present to relax the corrugator muscles, the gel filler lasts up to twice as long as there is not muscle action working on the filler.

BOTOX

BOTOX Cosmetic is not a threat.

The news last week reported that the FDA issued an “Early Communication” reviewing certain serious events when BOTOX is used in extremely high doses in children, particularly for the management of a cerebral palsy. These children were treated with 14-35 times the doses used in healthy adults who use BOTOX for cosmetic reasons. This FDA review is related to the treatment of neurological disorders in children which include non-FDA approved uses in the USA and are usually done under a study protocol.

BOTOX Cosmetic is extremely safe, and there has never been a single death related to the cosmetic use of BOTOX in over one million people (over 3 million cosmetic BOTOX treatments have been done in the USA in 2006 alone). BOTOX Cosmetic is fully approved by the FDA for its cosmetic application to the frown lines and even in higher dosages in adults with excessive underarm sweating.

In fact, BOTOX Cosmetic is much safer than the aspirin or Tylenol that people take when they overuse those frown muscles between the brows.

Interesting Facts:

3,181592: Number of BOTOX Cosmetic treatments administered in the USA in 2006.

1,000,000+: People who received treatments with BOTOX Cosmetic in 2006.

300,000: Number of men who received BOTOX Cosmetic in 2006.

97: Percentage of people satisfied with their BOTOX Cosmetic treatments based on a survey of approx. 1,000 patients.

75: Countries around the world who have approved the use of BOTOX Cosmetic.

6: Years since the FDA approval of BOTOX Cosmetic for the treatment of moderate to severe glabellar (vertical) lines between the brows in adults 18 to 65.

So, please feel safe and confident with your BOTOX Cosmetic treatments with Dr. Szachowicz. In fact, Dr. Szachowicz was invited to become a faculty member for Alergan, and this National Education Faculty status is only awarded to less than ½ % of all the over 6,000 physicians who give BOTOX Cosmetic treatments. If you have any concerns about BOTOX Cosmetic treatments come in to discuss them personally with Dr. Szachowicz.
